4 go missing as glacier melts in Gilgit

The melting of a glacier in GB led to rumors that many people are in danger; however, the authorities said the area is secure.

4 people went missing as a glacier melted near Gilgit’s Nalter Bala, forming an artificial lake.

Gilgit’s Diaster Management Authority official Wali khan stated that the water had started flowing from the glacier which caused an artificial lake to be formed. He further went on to mention that the rescue teams have been sent along with food supplies to the area.

The DG raised his concern that people used social media to spread havoc and fear to the people living there regarding the incident. He clarified that there was no danger in any way to the people who lived in low based areas from the lake. Wali Khan assured the people of Gilgit that he was ready to take on any emergency or catastrophe that came his way.

However, an employee of the forest authority had mentioned that the incident resulted in the damage of thousands of trees.

The authorities confirmed that four people which included two men and two women had gone missing in the glacier and that the chances of survival are almost zero.

There were ongoing rumors of tourists being stranded; however, the district administration has clarified such rumors.

About last year, three avalanches had hit Gilgit-Baltistan in which two of which caused no casualties. They hit the remote valley of Ghizer district in Gilgit blocking a major road as well as destroying various fields and trees.

However, the third avalanche had killed at least 15 people including five army soldiers in Gilgit Baltistan. As a consequence, the land and phone communications of the upper areas of the Gilgit-Baltistan region remained disconnected for four consecutive days.
