5 Easy Ways to Protect Your Hair in the Winter

Yikes, the cold weather is upon us and its not only our skin that is flaky and needs more attention. Our hair is also brittle and dry. There are 5 essential ways to protect your hair from the cold weather. Lets start talking about the simple things we can do to help our hair stay conditioned and glossy.

1.Cover your hair

If the weather is dry, windy or very cold, you will want to protect the hair while out in the elements. Find a beautiful silk scarf or hat to cover your hair each time you go out. For males, enjoy your favorite natural fiber, loose fitting hat to cover your scalp and locks.

2. Essential Fatty AcidsAvocado Oil

Increase your consumption of good fats like nuts and fish. These will directly moisturize your hair and skin as well as protect other essential body parts. There are many fish oil tablets in the market to take, if you are wary of eating nuts due to weight issues or allergies. Otherwise try cooking your food using coconut or avocado oil.  Purslane, is a herb, which has a very high concentrations of Omega 3’s and can be used in uncooked in salads, or made into curries.

You can also use the coconut or almond oil, and leave this on your hair for several hours to saturate the scalp and hair strands. Use slightly less if you intend to leave it in and go out.

Massaging the scalp helps bring life and strength to our hair. In cold months, scalp circulation may not be as good as it could be. We want to ensure circulation to the head to ensure healthy growth and natural oil production. There are all kinds of head massagers these days, one I particularly like that is gentle enough to use a couple of times every day is the Morrocco Method Scalp Massager. If you can afford it then there is nothing like going to your local hair salon and getting a head massage at least once a month.

4. Brushing the hair properly

Use a natural boar bristle brush, to brush your hair, starting from the bottom of the neck, so that the oils being produced in this region are taken to the tips of the hair. This ensures the hair stays hydrated in the cold weather. Learn how to properly brush the hair and make it a daily sacred ritual.

5. Deep Condition

Start a weekly or monthly deep conditioning ritual to maintain moisture and radiance in the winter months. Use almond oil or coconut oil, for a deep intensive treatment add in some egg yolk cover your hair with damp towel and leave for a couple of hours. The oils can even be left overnight for silky locks the next day.
