Cyclist Samar Khan organizes cycling camp for girls in Landi Kotal

Samar Khan told media that she along with the participants enjoyed the camp. Such activities will encourage other women and girls to join the camp.

Pakistani cyclist and adventure woman Samar Khan organized a cycling camp for girls in Landi Kotal, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The camps were organized with the help of the local community and media. Fifteen girls participated in the camp. Girls were provided with cycles and training on cycling. Pictures of girls enjoying the cycling camp were shared online and grabbed media attention.

Samar Khan told media that she along with the participants enjoyed the camp. Such activities will encourage other women and girls to join the camp. She added that women in these remote areas lack facilities women in these areas fail to exhibit their talent. The cycling camp is part of the initiative to set up the Samar Female Cycle Club in mountainous areas including Khyber to support local women. According to the national cyclist, there is abundant talent in the tribal districts.

Jemima, the local organizer of the camp, says sports are equally necessary for women as it is for men for a strong physique. She says the camp can help hunt the potential talented female cyclists in Khyber.

Cyclist Samar Khan received humongous appreciation on social media for her initiative to support tribal women.

“The moment, when they received their first bikes & experienced the joys, freedom & fun associated with it. How threatening & un-Islamic it can be ?? Their faces are telling the story,” says Samar Khan while sharing the pictures of a girl enjoying the camp. The athlete believes in women’s empowerment.

“From fears to success; cycling camp for girls in Khyber-Landikotal. Highly thankful to the local community & media channels for supporting us & making it happen, even after knowing the risks involved,” she wrote in another tweet.

She said cycling help in everyday commuting and girls are ready to lead and take their place in public.
