Bodies of Afghans Found Hanging From Poles in Balochistan

Five Afghan nationals were found executed in Balochistan, with the banned group Jaish-ul-Adl suspected of involvement, sparking regional security concerns.

The remote town of Dalbandin in Pakistan’s southwestern Balochistan province was rocked by the gruesome discovery of five bullet-ridden bodies hanging from electricity poles. The bodies, later identified as Afghan nationals from Lashkar Gah, Afghanistan, were found early on the morning of August 16, sending shockwaves through the local community.

The discovery was made near a government-run college, and the bodies were swiftly moved to the District Headquarters Hospital for autopsy. Attiq Shahwani, a senior government official in the area, confirmed that the victims had died from multiple bullet wounds, primarily in the chest area. Following the autopsy, the bodies were transferred to Quetta, where they will remain until their families can claim them.

The region of Dalbandin, which borders both Iran and Afghanistan, has long been a site of tension due to its proximity to conflict zones and its history as a crossing point for illegal immigrants. The area has also been plagued by low-level insurgency from Baloch separatist groups, who accuse the Pakistani government of exploiting Balochistan’s natural resources. Despite these tensions, the brutal nature of the killings has left the local population in shock and fear, as no group has yet claimed responsibility for the crime.

Jaish-ul-Adl’s Involvement Suspected

Although no group has officially claimed responsibility for the killings, local authorities have pointed to Jaish-ul-Adl, a banned Islamist militant group based in southeastern Iran, as the likely perpetrators. A video that surfaced about 20 days ago showed the victims in the captivity of Jaish-ul-Adl, leading authorities to suspect the group’s involvement in the brutal executions. Jaish-ul-Adl, which emerged in 2012 as the successor to the insurgent group Jundallah, is notorious for its violent attacks against Iranian security forces. Tehran has long accused Islamabad of harboring the group, an allegation that Pakistani authorities have consistently denied.

The involvement of Jaish-ul-Adl in this incident has raised concerns about the group’s increasing boldness and the potential implications for regional security. Senior Superintendent of Police Hussain Lehri noted that the investigation is ongoing, and efforts are being made to confirm whether the victims were indeed those seen in the video. The Pakistani police are working closely with local and international partners to gather more information and bring those responsible to justice.

Uncertainty and Fear Grip the Region

The discovery of the bodies has not only sparked fear among the local population but has also highlighted the growing insecurity in the region. Balochistan has long been a volatile area, with various insurgent groups operating within its borders, often targeting security forces and civilians alike. The involvement of an external militant group like Jaish-ul-Adl adds a new layer of complexity to the situation, raising concerns about the possibility of cross-border militancy and its impact on regional stability.

The Pakistani government has condemned the killings and vowed to bring the perpetrators to justice. However, the incident underscores the challenges faced by authorities in maintaining security in a region that is both geographically and politically complex. The ongoing investigation will likely focus not only on identifying those responsible but also on addressing the broader security concerns that have been exacerbated by this brutal crime.

As the investigation continues, the people of Dalbandin and the wider Balochistan province are left grappling with the implications of this shocking incident. The fear and uncertainty that now grip the region are a stark reminder of the challenges that persist in maintaining peace and security in an area fraught with tension and conflict. The international community will be watching closely as events unfold, with the hope that justice will be served and that such heinous acts of violence will not be repeated.
