Christian Woman Sentenced to Death in Blasphemy Case

The sentencing of a Christian woman to death for blasphemy and the extrajudicial killing of a doctor in police custody have sparked significant concerns regarding blasphemy laws and human rights in Pakistan.

A Christian woman was sentenced to death under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) by Judge Mohammad Afzal Majoka on Thursday. The verdict was announced after she was found guilty of sharing blasphemous content about the Holy Prophet (PBUH) on social media.

Along with the death penalty, the court imposed a fine of Rs100,000. The case, filed by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) cybercrime wing, stemmed from a complaint lodged by Shiraz Ahmed in 2020. Despite multiple bail requests to the trial court and Islamabad High Court, her appeals were consistently denied.
