Soap opera star Ron Hale passes away at 78

Widely recognized for his roles on ABC's General Hospital and the soap opera Ryan’s Hope, passed away at the age of 78 on August 27, 2024.

Ron Hale, widely recognized for his roles on ABC’s General Hospital and the soap opera Ryan’s Hope, passed away at the age of 78 on August 27, 2024. His family made the announcement but did not disclose the cause of death. Hale was a longtime resident of St. George, South Carolina, where he spent his final years.

Legacy on the Small Screen

Hale made his television debut in 1968 with an appearance on N.Y.P.D. He quickly found his footing in the soap opera world with his first major role on Search for Tomorrow in 1969. However, it was his portrayal of Roger Coleridge on Ryan’s Hope from 1975 to 1989 that solidified his reputation in daytime TV. His performance in over 900 episodes earned him Daytime Emmy nominations in both 1979 and 1980.

In addition to his long stint on Ryan’s Hope, Hale was celebrated for his role as Mike Corbin on General Hospital. He played the character from 1995 until his retirement in 2010, and reprised the role on the spin-off series Port Charles from 1997 to 2000.

Tributes Pour In

Following the announcement of Hale’s passing, tributes from co-stars and fans flooded social media. The official General Hospital account posted a heartfelt message on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “The entire General Hospital family is saddened to hear of Ron Hale’s passing. He was an incredible actor and an unforgettable colleague. May he rest in peace.”

Fellow actors also shared their condolences. Billy Warlock, known for his role on Days of Our Lives, expressed, “Ron was an amazing talent and an even better friend. I will miss you.” General Hospital star Jon Lindstrom fondly remembered his time with Hale, recalling shared memories on set and a memorable flight with Richard Simmons.

Career Beyond Soap Operas

Born Ronald Hale Thigpen, the actor’s career was not limited to television. In addition to his soap opera work, Hale appeared in films such as All the President’s Men and Trial by Jury, and TV shows like Matlock and MacGyver. He also performed on Broadway, most notably in William Saroyan’s The Time of Your Life.

Hale is survived by his nephews Max and Marc, and nieces Lori and Erin. His contributions to the world of entertainment, particularly soap operas, remain his lasting legacy.
