As the launch of Apple’s new iPhone 15 series draws near, leaks and rumors about the upcoming devices are flooding the internet. Predicting Apple’s naming conventions is not easy because the infamous “s” could pop up for any annual iPhone release.
Naming Conventions
In 2022, Apple called their device iPhone 14, so it is logical to refer to the 2023 model as “iPhone 15.” According to rumors, Apple may ditch the “Pro Max” name and switch to “Ultra” for their largest and most premium model, which wouldn’t be unheard of, given that the non-pro 6.7-inch iPhone is now referred to as “Plus.”
Versions and Ports
The iPhone 15 series will come in three different versions: iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, and iPhone 15 Pro. In 2024, smartphone manufacturers are required to adopt the USB-C port as a uniform connector, according to legislation passed by the European Union. Although the two-year deadline for this requirement gives Apple enough time to perfect an entirely new option, such as going portless, it is expected that the new iPhone 15 models will feature a USB-C port instead of a Lightning port.
Dynamic Island Display
Additionally, Dynamic Island will be available for the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus, as well as the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, which means Apple is doing away with the notch that has been a feature of its flagship iPhone lineup since the iPhone X.
Modem Chips and Design Changes

For the new devices, Apple plans to use Qualcomm modem chips, as its own modem chips are not quite ready. The standard iPhone 15 models will receive an upgrade to the A16 chip that was in the iPhone 14 Pro models, while the iPhone 15 Pro models will use faster and more efficient 3-nanometer A17 chips. Pro models are expected to have titanium frames, solid-state volume and mute buttons, minor design changes with more curved device edges, and the iPhone 15 Pro Max is expected to have periscope lens technology for enhanced zoom capabilities.
Buttons and Storage
Multiple sources agreed that Apple was on its way to replace the physical power and volume keys with haptic buttons, but it now seems that the company has encountered issues with these new buttons and will instead use familiar physical keys in all iPhone 15 models. To make space for increasingly demanding features like ProRes video, Apple may introduce a new storage tier at 2TB for the iPhone, which could bring the price dangerously close to $2,000.
iPhone 15 Fold and Release Date
The much awaited iPhone 15 is expected to be sold as an ultra-premium model and likely start at around $1,499. Apple is expected to announce its “iPhone 15” lineup in September 2023.
