Abu Dhabi’s Zayed International Airport to become first passport-free airport

By 2025, travelers passing through Zayed International Airport will no longer need traditional passports or boarding passes.

Abu Dhabi’s Zayed International Airport is poised to redefine global air travel with its ambitious “Smart Travel Project,” aiming to become the world’s first passport-free airport by 2025. This groundbreaking £2.3 billion initiative will integrate state-of-the-art biometric technology at every stage of the passenger journey, setting a new standard for airports worldwide.

A Seamless, Passport-Free Experience

By 2025, travelers passing through Zayed International Airport will no longer need traditional passports or boarding passes. Instead, biometric sensors will verify identities at key checkpoints, including check-in counters, immigration booths, duty-free shops, airline lounges, and boarding gates. This technology, which uses unique features like facial or iris patterns, will significantly enhance security and efficiency, enabling passengers to move from curb to gate in under 15 minutes.

Global Trends in Biometric Adoption

Zayed International Airport’s initiative is part of a broader global movement towards biometric technology in air travel. According to a survey by the International Air Transport Association (IATA), 75% of passengers prefer using biometric data over traditional paper documents. This preference reflects a growing demand for faster, more secure travel experiences.

Other major airports are also embracing this technology. Singapore’s Changi Airport, for example, is implementing a biometric clearance system in partnership with the government’s immigration authority, making the entire immigration process passportless. Similarly, airports in Hong Kong, Tokyo, and Delhi are introducing biometric terminals at key transit points.

Phased Implementation and Global Impact

The implementation of the Smart Travel Project at Zayed International Airport began in November 2023, with Etihad Airways leading the charge by introducing automated traveler registration services, self-service baggage delivery, and facial recognition at boarding gates. The project will be rolled out in three phases, eventually covering all touchpoints within the airport.

The airport’s innovative approach has attracted global attention, with Tesla CEO Elon Musk recently praising the project and calling for similar advancements in the United States. Despite the enthusiasm, the airport will still offer traditional verification methods for passengers uncomfortable with biometric technology, ensuring that all travelers have options tailored to their needs.
