BBC News | An Afghan woman made famous by a 1985 National Geographic cover talks exclusively to the BBC of her hopes for a new beginning.
Afghan Girl is a 1984 photographic portrait by journalist Steve McCurry which appeared on the June 1985 cover of National Geographic. The image is of an adolescent girl with green eyes in a red headscarf looking intensely at the camera.
Sharbat Gula spoke to BBC Afghan after being deported to Afghanistan from Pakistan where she lived as a refugee for 35 years.
