Apple has introduced the iPhone 16e, a lower-cost addition to its smartphone lineup that brings artificial intelligence (AI) features to a wider audience. Launched on Wednesday, February 19, the iPhone 16e marks a strategic shift for Apple as it competes against Android rivals in the mid-range smartphone segment while maintaining its premium brand positioning.
New Name for Apple’s Budget Line
The iPhone 16e moves away from Apple’s traditional “SE” naming convention for its budget-friendly models. Since the introduction of the SE series in 2016, sales of these lower-cost models have steadily declined, making up just 1% of total iPhone revenue last year, down from 10% at launch. Apple’s rebranding signals an effort to reposition its more affordable models in the market while leveraging AI to attract more users.

AI Features at a Lower Price
One of the biggest draws of the iPhone 16e is its ability to support Apple Intelligence, Apple’s suite of AI-powered tools. Equipped with the A18 chip—the same processor used in Apple’s high-end iPhone 16 models—the device integrates AI-powered features, including enhanced Siri capabilities, automatic text summarization, and on-the-fly emoji creation. Apple is betting that bringing AI to a more affordable device will help drive adoption and keep users engaged within its ecosystem.
Priced at $599, the iPhone 16e is about $200 cheaper than the base iPhone 16 model and significantly less expensive than the $999 iPhone 16 Pro. By offering AI capabilities at a lower price point, Apple aims to appeal to budget-conscious consumers while maintaining its premium market positioning.
Upgraded Design and Display
Bringing significant design upgrades, Apple’s latest budget model departs from previous SE versions in several ways. It now features a larger 6.1-inch display—the same size as the base iPhone 16—replacing the smaller screens of its predecessors. Additionally, Apple has eliminated the physical home button in favor of Face ID for unlocking, aligning the device more closely with the rest of the iPhone lineup.
The device also includes an upgraded camera system with a 48-megapixel sensor and two lenses, including a 2x zoom lens integrated into the primary camera. While it lacks the triple-lens system found on Pro models, Apple claims the 16e still delivers high-quality images, supporting Portrait Mode and Night Mode.
Introducing Apple’s First In-House Modem
For the first time, an Apple device will feature the C1 chip, the company’s first in-house modem for cellular connectivity. Previously, Apple depended on Qualcomm for its modem chips, but this transition to an internally designed component marks a significant step toward reducing reliance on third-party suppliers.
Sustainability Improvements
Apple claims the iPhone 16e has the best battery life ever for a 6.1-inch iPhone, lasting up to six hours longer than the iPhone 11. The device is also designed with sustainability in mind, incorporating recycled and renewable materials as part of Apple’s Apple 2030 initiative, which aims for carbon neutrality across its entire product lineup.

A Strategic Move for Market Expansion
Positioning the iPhone 16e at a competitive price point highlights a strategy to gain market share in regions where Android devices lead. Analysts suggest the new model could perform especially well in markets like India, where premium iPhones are often too expensive for many consumers.
However, some analysts remain cautious about the potential impact of AI features on iPhone sales. While Apple Intelligence is a major selling point, its rollout is expected to be gradual, with some regions receiving the technology later than others. The delays have already contributed to slower iPhone sales, particularly in China, where Apple has faced increasing competition from local brands.
USB-C and EU Market Return
Marking the final step in Apple’s transition to USB-C charging, this latest model is the last iPhone to adopt the universal standard. Previous SE models and older iPhones relied on Apple’s proprietary Lightning connector, which led to the temporary discontinuation of the SE lineup in the European Union due to regulatory requirements. With this update, the iPhone 16e is now fully compliant with EU standards and will be available for sale in the region.
Availability and Pre-Orders
Apple has announced that the iPhone 16e will be available for pre-order starting February 21 in 59 countries, including the U.S., China, and India. Shipments will begin on February 28, marking the device’s official retail launch.
Balancing Affordability with Profitability
While the iPhone 16e expands Apple’s reach, the company faces the challenge of balancing affordability with profitability. Analysts point out that Apple needs to ensure that the budget-friendly iPhone does not cannibalize sales of its higher-end models. “The problem with a lower-end product in a luxury portfolio is that you want it to be good but not so good as to cannibalize the crown jewels,” said Forrester Research analyst Dipanjan Chatterjee.

Apple’s AI investments have also raised questions about its long-term innovation strategy. Despite spending nearly $189 billion on research and development over the past decade, critics argue that Apple’s most significant product releases—such as the HomePod and the $3,500 Vision Pro headset—have yet to deliver the kind of mass-market appeal seen in previous iPhone generations.
