Artist found his lost paintings through popular Pakistan drama serial

A scene from the art exhibition at the Frere Hall in Karachi, in the drama serial, sparked outrage when it showed the artist's paintings hanging on the wall in the background of the scene.

An artist in Sindh ironically finds his lost paintings featured in a Pakistani drama serial a few days back. An artist from Sindh Seffy Soomro said that he spotted his paintings in an ongoing drama serial ‘Kabhi Mai Kabhi Tum’.

A scene from the art exhibition at the Frere Hall in Karachi, in the drama serial, sparked outrage when it showed the artist’s paintings hanging on the wall in the background of the scene. The artist and his friends claimed that he had lost these paintings following an exhibition at the Frere Hall. The authorities told the artist that they had lost those paintings during the exhibition, hence they couldn’t return them. However, years later these paintings were spotted on display at the Frere Hall.

Taking up the matter after the complaint of the artist, Minister for Culture, Tourism, Archives and Antiquities Syed Zulfikar Shah has created a committee to probe the matter. Soomro — who hails from Daharki in Sindh’s Ghotki district — detailed his ordeal by taking to his social media accounts and sharing images of two art pieces on Instagram, which were among the 16 to 17 paintings that he had created as part of his thesis project for the topic “Innocent Faces” at the University of Sindh’s Department of Fine Arts.

A high-level committee including Director Generals of the department will conduct an in-depth investigation in the matter. Talking to a local TV channel, Soomro asserted that, at first, he was happy that he found his paintings. However, he was also upset because he was being deceived as authorities told him that those were lost. “But after that, I was saddened by the fact that they had deceived me by telling me that the paintings were lost,” he said in an interview.

He added that he will apply to the Frere Hall administration for the damages and return of the paintings.
