A shocking incident occurred in Lahore when a violent mob attacked a woman, and almost killed her, by a group of protestors who accused her of blasphemy. A woman was wearing a white-color Arabic kaftan from A Kuwaiti designer with Arabic calligraphy and scripture written on it in multi-color. A brand informed one of the Instagram users in Pakistan that the Arabic inscription on the dress means ‘Life and Beautiful’.
Mob confused Arabic calligraphy with Quranic verses, and attacked her. Police appeared on the spot and controlled the mob. ASP Shehrbano appeared on the spot and took the woman from the crowd.
The video appeared on social media and instantly went viral. The incident plunged the entire country into shock and raised alarm over the increasing religious intolerance and extremism in society. Social media users praised the police officer for tackling the crowd and bravely saving the life of the woman.
The woman was taken out of the shop in an abaya with her face covered. Later she was made to apologize and a video statement was also released. While some are praising the efforts of the police officer in settling the issue, they are also upset with the woman being forced to apologize without committing any offense.
