The recent assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh has drawn significant global attention and concern. US President Joe Biden stated on Thursday that the killing was detrimental to efforts aimed at reaching a ceasefire in the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict. Speaking from Joint Base Andrews in Maryland, Biden emphasized the negative impact of Haniyeh’s assassination on peace talks, remarking, “It doesn’t help.”
The assassination has heightened the risk of a broader Middle Eastern war, as Haniyeh was killed in Iran, a nation known for its support of Hamas. His death, confirmed by both Hamas and Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, occurred shortly after he attended the swearing-in ceremony of Iran’s new president. This event has led to threats of retaliation against Israel, further escalating tensions in the region.
Biden’s Push for Peace
President Biden’s comments came during a significant moment, as he welcomed back American detainees released by Russia, including Jewish-American journalist Evan Gershkovich. In his address, Biden reiterated his commitment to peace, mentioning a “very direct” conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The US President stressed the urgency of moving towards a ceasefire, stating, “We have the basis for a ceasefire. They should move on it, and they should move on it now.”
Despite Israel’s lack of an official claim of responsibility for the assassination, Prime Minister Netanyahu has highlighted recent “crushing blows” delivered to Iran’s proxies, including Hamas and Hezbollah. Israel’s aggressive stance has raised fears of a wider conflict, with Iran issuing threats of retaliation following Haniyeh’s death, which was caused by an explosive device planted in his Tehran residence.
Humanitarian Crisis in Gaza
The humanitarian crisis in Gaza has been exacerbated by the ongoing conflict. According to the Gaza health ministry, Israeli military actions have resulted in nearly 40,000 Palestinian deaths and displaced nearly the entire population of 2.3 million. The dire situation has led to severe food shortages and accusations of genocide against Israel.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has been actively involved in diplomatic efforts to address the crisis. Blinken discussed strategies to secure a ceasefire, release hostages, and increase humanitarian assistance with UAE Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan. The United States has clarified that it was not involved in Haniyeh’s assassination, aiming to distance itself from the act and focus on peacebuilding efforts.
In the wake of the assassination, Hamas has called for a “day of rage” to honor their fallen leader. This call to action has intensified fears among the residents of Gaza, who worry that Haniyeh’s death will further prolong the conflict and exacerbate the humanitarian situation.
Call for Accountability
The international community has also called for accountability of Israel and its actions in Gaza. The family of Australian aid worker Zomi Frankcom, who was killed in Gaza, has demanded further investigations into her death. An Australian government-ordered report highlighted significant failures by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), leading to the tragic incident involving the World Central Kitchen (WCK) aid convoy.

Former Australian defense force chief Mark Binskin, who authored the report, pointed out a “significant breakdown in situational awareness” and errors in decision-making by the IDF. While he did not believe the strikes were intentional, the report recommended that Israel issue an apology and consider compensation for the victims’ families. The call for accountability underscores the broader need for careful consideration and action to address the humanitarian and geopolitical consequences of the conflict.
