The nation remembers Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto on her 66th birth anniversary, today. Benazir Bhutto was an iconic leader and a symbol of women empowerment who rose to Pakistan’s political arena at a young age while continuing the legacy of her father.
She became the first female Prime Minister of any Muslim majority country. She served two terms as prime minister of Pakistan in 1988–90 and in 1993–96.
My mother would have been 66 today. She wrote this poem on her 50th birthday;
“Children: Hear the desert wind
Hear it whisper
Have faith
We will win.” https://t.co/W7WyKLC3f6 pic.twitter.com/p7NJts4cky— BilawalBhuttoZardari (@BBhuttoZardari) June 21, 2019
After her father, Zulfikar Ali Bhutto’s arrest and execution in 1979, Bhutto assumed the leadership of the party and spearheaded a robust political movement against military ruler General Zia-ul-Haq. She was subjected to mental torture including frequent house arrests, which caused her several health problems.
Chairman PPP Bilawal Bhutto Zardari issued a message on the occasion reminiscing the struggles her mother faced to pave the way for a democratic setup in the country.
Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, who is now leading the party, stated the problems and difficulties of the society and state and can be overcome if the political ideology of his mother is followed.
He said, “It is need of the hour that issues and conflicts should be resolved through reciprocal reconciliation.”
