Can Maryam Nawaz be presented as a hero in any civilized country? asks Shahbaz Gill

As Maryam Nawaz is to appear before the NAB in Lahore, the party workers have been instructed to come and welcome their leader. However, political analysts believe that such tactics are tantamount to harassing the anti-corruption graft. Are PML-N supporters likely to attack the law enforcement agencies?

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Vice-president Maryam Nawaz to appear before the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) today (Tuesday) in a case pertaining to illegal transfer of 180 acres of land in Raiwind. Bags containing stones have been found in cars of the PML-N’s supporters who, as per sources, intended to attack the police if stopped from entering into the bureau’s building. People are asking can Maryam Nawaz be presented as a hero in a case related to corruption?

The property was transferred in the name of Maryam Nawaz in 2014 whereas 100 kanals each were transferred to former prime minister Nawaz Sharif and erstwhile Punjab CM Shehbaz Sharif – father and uncle of Maryam.

The anti-graft body summoned details from the PML-N vice-president about her source of income through which she purchased the aforementioned land and the taxes that she paid.

The PML-N leadership completed consultations on legal matters and decided that Maryam Nawaz will present her stance before the anti-corruption watchdog. The PML-N workers accompanied Maryam Nawaz from Jati Umrah to the NAB office in a convoy.

The PML-N supporters and activists have been doing a trend #IamMaryamNawaz on Twitter since yesterday. They largely argued that Maryam was innocent and being called by the NAB for her determination to bring democracy in the country.

Federal Minister for Science and Technology Fawad Ch lamented over Pakistan’s flawed criminal justice system where criminals like Nawaz Sharif and Maryam are seen receiving poetry.

Prime Minister’s Special Assistant on Political Communication Dr. Shahbaz Gill also questioned: can Maryam Nawaz be presented as a hero in any civilized country?

Earlier, the Lahore High Court (LHC) granted bail to PML-N leader Maryam Nawaz who was arrested on August 8, 2019  in the Chaudhry Sugar Mills (CSM) case. A two-member bench of the high court, comprising Justice Ali Baqar Najafi and Justice Sardar Ahmad Naeem, announced the verdict.

A piece of land measuring over 3,568 Kanals was bought by the Sharif family in 2013. The largest part of the property, 1,936 Kanals, was transferred in the name of Nawaz’s mother Shamim Bibi. The land that was transferred to Maryam was 1,440 Kanals. A 96-Kanal plot each was also transferred to Nawaz and Shahbaz. The sources claimed most of the land was government land which the Sharif family illegally got transferred in their name at cheap rates. Moreover, only the LDA had the authority to deal with such matters but the Sharif family involved local government officials. The property was declared as green land to stop construction around the Sharif family’s Jati Umra mansions.
