The “Dhi Rani Programme” launched by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz seems like a significant initiative aimed at addressing the financial strain faced by underprivileged families, particularly when it comes to the burden of marriage expenses. By providing couples with around Rs.100,000, along with essential household items like furniture and clothing, this program directly tackles the economic challenges exacerbated by inflation and poverty.
The practice of dowry has historically placed a heavy financial burden on the families of brides, making marriage a stressful event for many. Initiatives like this could help ease that pressure by covering basic needs for newlyweds, reducing the reliance on dowries, and promoting financial security for couples starting their lives together.

The program’s success could depend on its implementation and ensuring that the funds and resources reach the families most in need. It could also serve as a model for other regions to address similar socio-economic challenges.
During the inauguration of the Punjab Dhi Rani Programme, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz announced, “Each newly-married couple will receive Rs 100,000 as wedding money through ATM.”

She also mentioned that meals would be provided for up to 20 guests for each couple.
According to a statement from the provincial government, newlyweds will be provided with essential furniture, household utensils, clothing, and other daily necessities.
The statement further noted that applications for mass marriages under the Punjab Dhi Rani Programme are now being accepted online at cmp.punjab.gov.pk. A dedicated helpline, 1312, has also been set up for the initiative. The chief minister emphasized that special teams would conduct home visits to verify applicants, ensuring transparency in the program.
