Indian-American entrepreneur and politician Vivek Ganapathy Ramaswamy recently made a controversial remark regarding the Roosevelt Hotel in New York City, which is owned by PIA Investment. His statement, reported by The News, has drawn criticism for being perceived as biased and factually incomplete.
Ramaswamy, a close associate of Vice President-elect J.D. Vance, was selected by President-elect Donald Trump to contribute to enhancing the performance of the U.S. administration. His comments have raised concerns, particularly since the Roosevelt Hotel, along with over 100 other hotels in New York City, has been rented by Mayor Eric Adams’ administration to address the housing needs of illegal immigrants, requiring 14,000 rooms in total. Many of these hotels are owned by foreign or non-American corporations, such as Air India and the Indian Taj Group.

In his statement, Ramaswamy implied that New York City is paying $220 million in rent to the Pakistani government for the Roosevelt Hotel. However, critics point out that the hotel is owned by PIA Investment, a semi-governmental corporation. Under the terms of the three-year lease, which began on May 15, 2023, the deal would generate only $18 million in cash for PIA Investment upon completion.
Detractors argue that Ramaswamy should have thoroughly reviewed the details of the lease and the hotel’s ownership before making such assertions. His political and financial remarks have been deemed outside his purview, as his role in the incoming administration is to improve federal government performance, not to comment on state or municipal finances. Nonetheless, as a public figure, Ramaswamy and his close associate Elon Musk retain the right to voice opinions on the allocation of federal funds to state and municipal governments.
