Selena Gomez is no longer the most followed person on Instagram. The songstress had been the queen of the social media app but now football superstar Cristiano Ronaldo has officially just dethroned her with a hundred thousand more followers than her.
Gomez who is known for being the voice behind hit songs like Love You Like A Love Song, Come And Get It, Same Old Love and most recently Back To You, became the most followed Instagram user and charges around $800,000 per post. This figure is the same as that of the new most followed user, Portuguese Football player Ronaldo.
Ronaldo usurping her to become the most followed user most likely won’t bother Gomez who had openly announced her plans to take a break to focus on her health a while ago. In fact, speaking to Elle the Good for you singer stated:
“I haven’t been on the internet in months. I don’t have my password for Instagram. The reason why is, it’s not real to me. I know my voice is very prominent, but I’m not careless with it. I’m selective.”

This year alone she has posted far less than the years preceding it. This most likely has to do with her ongoing battle against lupus, an autoimmune disease which required her to have a kidney transfer back in May. Most recently, the pop star appeared in two raw confessional Instagram stories before announcing that she was taking a short break.
In the Sep 23rd post, Gomez posted
Again. As much as I am grateful for the voice that social media gives each of us, I am equally grateful to be able to step back and live my life present to the moment I have been given. Kindness and encouragement only for a bit! Just remember – negative comments can hurt anybody’s feelings. Obvi.”
This news was followed by a TMZ report which stated that Gomez had in fact been hospitalized and was undergoing mental health treatment. People reported that Selena broke down after an alarmingly low white blood cell count propelled her family to have her readmitted to the hospital.
As a result, the singer has been on Instagram much less and her long-awaited second solo album has been put on hold. She has also rarely promoted her music and the fact that the songs continue to thrive is a testament to her appeal.

Cristiano Ronaldo, on the other hand, has constantly been active on Instagram and in all social spheres. The athlete is always posting pictures of himself, his family and his sport, all of which propelled him to become the most followed user. Most recently, the sports star was hit with rape allegations which he has vehemently denied. Recently he opened up publically about this:
““Of course, this story is interfering in my life,” Ronaldo said. “I have a partner, four children, an aging mother, sisters, a brother, a family with whom I am very close. Not to mention my reputation, which is that of someone exemplary … Imagine what it means when someone accuses you of rape, whether you have all that or not. I know who I am and what I did. Truth will out one day.
And the people who criticize me or seek to expose my life today, who make it into a circus, these people will see. I explained to my partner. My son, Cristiano Jr, is too young to understand. It’s worst for my mother and my sisters. They are stunned, and at the same time very angry. This is the first time I have seen them in this state.” It will be interesting if the investigation into his rape case will affect his Instagram popularity in the days to come.
