Dr Adib Rizvi bestowed with prestigious medical award

Dr. Adib Rizvi has received the prestigious British Medical Journal Award for his exceptional contributions to medical science in South Asia. His pioneering work in free and ethical healthcare has transformed Pakistan’s medical landscape.

Professor Adib Rizvi has been honored with a prestigious British Medical Journal Award for his services and contribution to the medical sciences in the South Asian region.

The British Medical Journal Award is the leading medical award that honors medical professionals, researchers, and institutions annually for their services in the medical sciences.

The award, conferred during a ceremony in New Delhi, was accepted on Dr Rizvi’s behalf by Dr Sanjay Nagra, co-chair of the BMJ Advisor Board.

Dr Nagra paid a rich tribute to Pakistan’s Dr Adib Rizvi for establishing a healthcare system offering free, accessible, and equitable treatment in Pakistan, calling it a model for developing nations.

Addressing the audience via Zoom, Dr Rizvi expressed gratitude for the honour and commended BMJ’s role in promoting medical education and research. Dr Rizvi urged the countries to move beyond politics and in favor of protecting the marginalised communities and providing them better healthcare facilities.

Dr Adib Rizvi is a renowned Pakistani transplant surgeon and the founder of the Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplant. Over the years, the institution has cemented itself as the trusted organization providing the best healthcare facilities, such as dialysis, lithotripsy, oncology treatments, and organ transplants.

What started off as an eight-bed urology ward at Karachi’s Civil Hospital in 1970, the institution now treats a million patients annually. The institution has introduced groundbreaking achievements in Pakistan’s healthcare landscape, particularly in the fields of urology and organ transplantation.​

Over the years, the Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation has evolved into South Asia’s largest Urology, nephrology, and transplant center, offering comprehensive services entirely free of cost.

Dr Adib Rizvi played a pivotal role in the passing of the Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues Act in 2010. The act legalised cadaveric organ donation and curtailed the unethical organ trade in Pakistan.
