Pakistani drama Barzakh earns global recognition with a nomination for Best Drama Series at the 2024 Asian Academy Creative Awards, while facing local controversy for its LGBTQ+ representation.

Pakistani fantasy drama Barzakh, starring Fawad Khan and Sanam Saeed, has been nominated for Best Drama Series at the Asian Academy Creative Awards 2024. Directed by Asim Abbasi, the show delves into themes of love, loss, and family dynamics, blending reality with the supernatural. The drama premiered globally on July 19 via Zindagi’s YouTube and ZEE5 platforms. The nomination is a proud moment for the show’s creators, who expressed their gratitude for the recognition. Abbasi remarked, “Writing & directing this show was one of the most surreal experiences. The cast and crew’s commitment brought this story to life, and I’m grateful to everyone who believed in this vision.” Producer Kejriwal echoed his sentiments, adding, “Being nominated for Best Series at the Asian Academy Creative Awards is a deeply meaningful milestone for our team.” The series is set to compete against entries from 13 countries at the awards ceremony, which will take place in Singapore this December.

A Story with Universal Themes

Set against the stunning backdrop of the Hunza Valley, Barzakh is a six-episode drama that explores the liminal space between life and death, deeply rooted in Islamic traditions. The series stands out for its unique take on universal themes, including the emotional bonds that transcend culture and geography. Kejriwal highlighted how Barzakh explores family and loss in a way that resonates with audiences globally. “This story connects us all, regardless of our backgrounds,” she stated.

Featuring a star-studded cast including Muhammad Fawad Khan, Salman Shahid, and Khushhal Khan, the show received critical acclaim internationally. The show’s breathtaking visuals and deeply emotional storyline, set amidst the mountainous Hunza Valley, were lauded for their cinematic quality. Its mixture of folklore, spirituality, and familial relationships made it a standout project for both Pakistani and international audiences.

Controversy in Pakistan

Despite international success, Barzakh faced significant backlash in Pakistan. The show was taken down from YouTube in the country on August 9, following the airing of its finale. The controversy stemmed from a romantic subplot involving Fawad Khan’s character Saifullah and Lorenzo, an Italian played by Franco Giusti. The portrayal of a gay relationship sparked outrage among some Pakistani viewers, who felt that it clashed with the country’s Islamic values.

In response to the public sentiment, the showrunners voluntarily pulled Barzakh from YouTube Pakistan. An official statement from Zee Zindagi explained, “In light of the current public sentiment in Pakistan, we have decided to voluntarily withdraw Barzakh from YouTube Pakistan.” While the removal disappointed many fans, it underscored the delicate balance between artistic expression and cultural sensitivities in the region. Despite this setback, Barzakh continues to thrive on international platforms, gaining accolades and global viewership.

Global Acclaim Amid Local Sensitivities

Although Barzakh stirred controversy in Pakistan, its nomination at the prestigious Asian Academy Creative Awards reflects its global appeal and success. Abbasi described the experience as “surreal,” praising the dedication of the entire team. Kejriwal also expressed immense gratitude for the international recognition, emphasizing that the show’s themes of love, family, and loss resonated across cultures.

While the show may have faced challenges at home, its international success illustrates the evolving nature of Pakistani television and its capacity to tell globally relevant stories. As the team prepares for the awards ceremony in December, Barzakh remains a powerful example of how Pakistani media can blend tradition with innovation, sparking both debate and admiration across borders.
