ECP Directs Political Parties to Disclose Election Expenses

ECP instructs political parties to disclose election expenses and donors by April 22, enhancing transparency and accountability in the electoral process.

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has issued a directive requiring political parties to disclose their election expenditures and list of donors by April 22. According to Section 211 of the Elections Act, 2017, all participating parties in the 2024 general elections must provide details of donors who contributed one million rupees or more to their election campaigns.

Moreover, parties are mandated to submit reports on election expenses within 60 days from the date of publication of returned candidates’ names in the official gazette. The deadline for both submissions is April 22, 2024.

Transparency in Election Finances

The ECP’s move aims to enhance transparency and accountability in the electoral process. By disclosing their financial records and donors, political parties are expected to uphold ethical standards and ensure fair competition during elections. This requirement fosters public trust in the integrity of the electoral system and promotes a level playing field for all candidates.

The commission’s strict deadlines underscore the importance of timely and accurate reporting by political parties. Failure to comply with these regulations may result in penalties or legal repercussions. The ECP is committed to enforcing transparency measures and conducting thorough oversight to uphold the integrity of the electoral process and safeguard democratic principles.
