Elon Musk’s biographer warns of mental health concerns

Seth Abramson warns Elon Musk's mental health issues could pose a national security threat amid his growing political influence.

Seth Abramson, a Harvard-educated attorney, former professor, and biographer of billionaire Elon Musk, has sparked widespread debate after raising serious concerns about Musk’s mental health, substance use, and escalating influence on global and domestic affairs. In a series of detailed posts on the social media platform X, Abramson warned that Musk’s struggles could have dire consequences for the United States.

Biographer Raises the Alarm

Abramson, who has been tracking Musk’s behavior online for two years, described the Tesla and SpaceX CEO as “going mad” in light of Musk’s own admissions of mental illness, heavy drug use, and extreme stress. “I legitimately believe Elon Musk may be going mad,” Abramson wrote. “Given that he’s admitted to all of mental illness, heavy drug use, and crippling stress, it is now reasonable to fear he is deeply unwell.”

Abramson’s primary concern lies in the intersection of Musk’s private struggles and his vast influence in “civilization-essential industries” such as space exploration, electric vehicles, and social media. The biographer suggested that Musk’s behavior could have “dramatic public consequences,” particularly in light of his upcoming role as a key advisor in President-elect Donald Trump’s administration.

Escalating Influence in Politics and Global Affairs

Musk’s role in the political arena has grown significantly, adding to Abramson’s concerns. As part of Trump’s incoming administration, Musk is set to co-lead the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), an initiative aimed at reducing federal expenditures. Abramson has described this as a potential threat, calling the initiative unconstitutional and urging legal and federal action to block it.

Abramson also highlighted Musk’s increasingly provocative rhetoric, including his controversial posts on international politics. For example, Musk recently launched a poll on X asking whether the United States should “liberate the British from their oppressive government.” He has also made inflammatory comments about the UK government and opposition leader Keir Starmer, falsely accusing Starmer of failing to prosecute grooming gangs during his tenure as director of public prosecutions.

Calls for Action

In his warnings, Abramson urged the U.S. government to act decisively before Trump takes office on January 20. He recommended cutting all federal contracts with Musk, filing lawsuits against his DOGE initiative, and launching investigations into his conduct. Abramson stressed the urgency of these measures, warning that inaction could lead to severe consequences.

“If no action is taken—and I suspect it won’t be—whatever harm this man inflicts on America as President in his growing instability will not only be his burden but also the responsibility of those who ignored clear, informed warnings like this one,” Abramson stated.

Past Controversies

Musk’s erratic behavior has been a subject of concern before. Reports suggest he experienced a mental breakdown after being booed at a Dave Chappelle show in December 2022, prompting Twitter employees to consider calling a wellness check. More recently, Musk voiced support for far-right figure Tommy Robinson, who is serving a jail sentence for contempt of court. Author Ben Mezrich previously described Musk as deeply affected by public criticism, noting that he locked himself in his office after the Chappelle incident, leading to concerns for his safety.

Abramson’s comments have divided public opinion. Supporters argue that Musk’s vast influence makes his mental health a matter of national concern, while critics accuse the biographer of exaggeration. One X user remarked, “The world’s richest man could be someone great—but instead, turns out to be a thin-skinned drug-addled Bond villain.” Another suggested Musk should retreat from public life: “Why doesn’t he buy a private island and spend his life growing vegetables and walking on the beach?”
