‘Enthralling’ Lyari gang war web series enters production

"Lyari gang war is a massive part of Karachi's rich history; we would want to talk about it. We are from the streets and that is why we take pride in covering even the gory details of this city," said Producer Fizza Ali Meerza while opening up about the content of the web series.

The dynamic film-maker duo, Nabeel Qureshi and Fizza Ali Meerza, will produce a web series on the Lyari gang war.

The duo in the interview with a local news outlet asserted that the work on the web series is in the initial stages. “This is the first time Nabeel and I are co-directing a project as well,” Fizza Ali Meerza said. Ali Abbasi and Basit Naqvi of Laal Kabootar have written the screenplay for the web series.

Fizza asserted that the web series on the subject was in the pipeline for years.

Lyari gang war: an enthralling web series in making

Meerza shared. “Lyari gang war has been making news yet again for a while now, so we thought this was a good time to start working on it. The project, however, is still in its initial stages. “It’s too soon to reveal the juicy details, but we have completed our research on the subject and our script is in completion stages as well. We plan to start shooting in winters as the weather is nicer and it’s easier to work then.”

She revealed that they have not finalized the cast for the web series yet. “I wouldn’t want to reveal too much but no, we haven’t looked upon the options on who should we star in this web series,” Meerza said.

Meerza says the web series will shed light on the incidents in Lyari from the beginning. The web series will also shed light on the impact of the Lyari gang war on the entire city. She promised an enthralling and engaging web series on the subject of Lyari gang war for the audience.

“I’ve been born and raised in Karachi. Nabeel has lived a huge chunk of his life in this city. We are from the streets and that is why we take pride in covering even the gory details of this city. Lyari gang war is a massive part of Karachi’s rich history; we would want to talk about it,” she said while describing the content of the web series.

Best time for web series on Lyari gang war

Director Nabeel Qureshi in his tweet confirmed the news. He stated that now is the best time to produce a web series on the Lyari gang war. Perhaps because the tales of the heinous crimes, gross bloodshed, and ugly gang wars in Lyari have once again resurfaced in media.

For a decade, Lyari became a hotbed of crime syndicates interwoven with political involvement, in the city. The issue became the topic of heated media discourse after Federal Minister Ali Zaidi of PTI accused the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) of having links with infamous gangster Uzair Baloch of Lyari.

The heated exchange between politicians brought up the spine-chilling tales of bloodshed and murders. Also, how criminality and political terrorism marred the development of the densely populated area of Lyari in Karachi.

Quaid-e-Azam Zindabad release

Meerza also informed that they are also planning to release the trailer of much-hyped movie-Quaid-e-Azam Zindabad. The movie stars Mahira Khan and Fahad Mustafa. She says they are waiting for the cinema to reopen. As they want to release the trailer in theatres as well.

“We are all set to release the trailer but due to the current Covid-19 situation, we have been holding back,” said Meerza. She said they are waiting until we hear when the cinemas are being reopened. “We want to release the trailer not just digitally but theatrically as well. So, as soon as hear from them, we will work on it.”

Fizza Ali Meerza said they have grand plans for the promotion of the film. But they are waiting for the authorities to give them a go-ahead. She said until then they will wait patiently.

Fahad Mustafa will play a cop in the movie, Nabeel Qureshi and Fizza Saleem will tackle another social dilemma of corruption and bribery in Quaid-e-Azam Zindabad.

Appreciably, all the directorial ventures of Nabeel Qureshi and Fizza Saleem have projected various socio-economic issues in a thought-provoking and light-hearted manner. Load Wedding highlighted the evil of dowry while Actor-in-Law portrayed a young lawyer who rose to fame after fighting difficult cases. The movie also discussed the harassment of women as the second issue.
