FIA Questions Imran Khan in Adiala Jail Over Controversial Tweet

After twice refusing to appear before investigators concerning the tweet, the former prime minister finally joined the probe.

The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) investigators questioned Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan at Adiala Jail regarding a controversial tweet posted on his official X account, sources told Geo News.

After twice refusing to appear before investigators concerning the tweet, the former prime minister finally joined the probe. The contentious tweet referenced a video about the Fall of Dhaka incident, stating, “Every Pakistani should study the Hamood ur Rahman Commission Report and get to know who was the true traitor, General Yahya Khan or Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.”

An investigation team comprising FIA’s Additional Director Ayaz Ahmed and Sub-Inspector Munib visited Adiala Jail to question Khan, who was accompanied by his lawyers Chaudhry Zaheer Abbas and Intezar Hussain Panjutha. During the investigation, the FIA team confronted Khan with his controversial X post.

In addition to Khan, the FIA also issued notices to three other senior PTI leaders—Barrister Gohar Khan, Omar Ayub, and Raoof Hasan—in connection with the case. While Omar excused himself from appearing due to a “busy schedule,” Gohar and Raoof appeared before the investigators on Wednesday.

The Islamabad High Court (IHC), responding to a petition against the FIA’s call-up notices, directed the agency not to take any adverse action against the PTI leaders and instructed them to join the investigation.

Omar Ayub, PTI Secretary General, expressed strong discontent over being summoned by the FIA for the X post investigation. Speaking in the National Assembly, he questioned the jurisdiction of a probe agency’s sub-inspector to issue a call-up notice to parliamentarians.

He emphasized that parliamentarians, according to the Constitution, are part of the state and that the parliament holds supremacy over other institutions. Omar criticized the growing perception that association with the PTI is becoming a crime and decried the lack of laws to prevent such actions. He demanded that the House summon the FIA’s director general to clarify his constitutional limits and the language used in the call-up notice.
