The Frontier Works Organization (FWO) on Monday officially began work on the Rawalpindi Ring Road project (R3) under the supervision of the Rawalpindi Development Authority (RDA).
Chairman RDA Tariq Mehmood Murtaza inaugurated the construction work and cut the ribbon for the project’s execution at Thallian. Director-General RDA Tahir Zafar Abbasi, Chief Engineer RDA Dr. Habibul Haq Randhawa, and the FWO team’s incharge Col.Muhammad Irfan were also present on the occasion.
On this occasion, the chief engineer gave a detailed presentation on the project. According to details, the length of this project will be 8992 Kanals (38.3 km). The R3 will have a design speed of 120 kph.
Moreover, R3 would comprise six lanes and five interchanges at National Highway (N-5) at Baanth and cross through Chakbeli Road, Adiala Road, Chakri Road and terminate at the motorway (M-2) at Thallian Interchange.

As for the cost, the government of Punjab had approved the project’s cost of Rs. 33694.43 million. The project’s Land Acquisition cost will be Rs 6724.73 million and the project’s construction cost will be Rs 26969.70 million.
R3 to be a gamechanger?
Earlier, RDA awarded the Rs. 22.8 billion contract for R3 to FWO after a bidding contest. FWO had offered Rs. 300 million less bid than the estimated cost. RDA Chairman Tariq Mehmood Murtaza said that the FWO emerged as the lowest bidders after the committee opened technical and financial bids in the presence of all concerned.
The project will be completed within two years. This is a major development as the R3 project has been in pending for the last 17 years. However, FWO has a track record of completing work on Pakistan’s mega-projects with efficiency. Under RDA’s supervision, the project will soon be completed.

Once the road is completed, it will ease congestion on the urban transportation system of the twin cities. The Ring Road Rawalpindi will cater to the traffic issues by providing an alternative bypass by connecting N-5 with M-2
