In a surprising turn of events, Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa reached out to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, highlighting the necessity of engaging in political dialogue with the incarcerated founder of their party, Imran Khan. Gandapur, a member of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), emphasized the importance of addressing political matters through dialogue, citing it as a pathway to a political resolution. He reiterated his call for political engagement with Imran Khan, who has been in custody since August of the preceding year on various charges including corruption and terrorism.
Gandapur disclosed that Prime Minister Shehbaz had given assurances regarding his request to meet Imran Khan at Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi, despite heightened security measures. The purpose of this meeting would primarily revolve around discussions concerning the upcoming Senate elections. Additionally, Gandapur underscored his intent to resolve public issues during his conversation with the Prime Minister, who responded positively by assuring the clearance of outstanding provincial dues.
Gandapur hopeful of cooperation
This unexpected meeting between high-ranking officials from opposing political factions holds significance in alleviating political tensions, particularly following the removal of the PTI-led government through a no-confidence motion in April 2022. The PTI has accused the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and its coalition partners of illegitimately gaining power after allegedly manipulating the results of the February 8 elections.
Gandapur, upon assuming office as KP CM, pledged to maintain a cooperative relationship with the federal government while upholding the party’s stance regarding the alleged electoral fraud. The timing of this meeting coincides with a notice issued by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to Gandapur, concerning a petition seeking his disqualification over alleged misinformation regarding land ownership.
