Deputy Collector Customs Quetta, Dr. Abdul Quddus Sheikh, was severely beaten and succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday morning in Karachi.
Dr. Sheikh was beaten by suspected smugglers at Gahi Khan Chowk when he was returning home after seizing smuggled goods during an operation in Kolpur area of Quetta. According to reports, unidentified men stopped his car, beat him severely and fled. He suffered from ruptured lungs and a broken jaw.
Deputy Commissioner Islamabad shared the news of the attack on his Twitter account. He informed that Dr. Sheikh was in critical condition after being beaten by a gang of smugglers. The custom official went into a coma after enduring severe injuries and was shifted to Karachi on a chartered flight last night.
He showed the utmost dedication & commitment to public service. Govt must bring the perpetrators of this crime to justice.
A statement issued by the Customs Department on the demise of the official stated: “This was not the first attack on customs officials engaged in anti-smuggling operations […] in the last three years, 10 officers/officials have lost their lives and dozens injured.
“Besides the fatalities, there have been notable instances of staff being kidnapped, especially in Balochistan and KP provinces, to browbeat the Customs Department into submission,” the statement added.
The social media expressed their concern and sorrow over the death of Dr. Abdul Quddus Sheikh, the commentators paid homage to the brave custom official on Twitter.
“Very sad to learn about the passing away of young civil servant Dr. Abdul Quddus Sheikh… He showed the utmost dedication & commitment to public service. Govt must bring the perpetrators of this crime to justice. My sympathies are with the bereaved family!” wrote opposition leader Shahbaz Sharif.
