Group calls get smarter with WhatsApp features

WhatsApp adds selective calling, fun effects, better resolution, and a revamped desktop interface to enhance video call experience.

In a bid to rival platforms like Zoom and Google Meet, WhatsApp has introduced a slew of updates to its video calling features, aiming to make the app more versatile for both personal and professional use. These updates, designed to boost convenience, engagement, and quality, are being rolled out across mobile and desktop platforms.

Selective Participant Calling: A Game-Changer

Previously, WhatsApp allowed users to initiate video calls with an entire group chat at once. While convenient for some, this approach often resulted in disturbances for those who weren’t available or interested in joining. Now, users can select specific participants from a group chat to join a video call, enabling more targeted and less intrusive communication. This feature is particularly useful for planning surprises, hosting private discussions, or simply avoiding unnecessary interruptions.

Playful Video Call Effects

To make video calls more engaging and fun, WhatsApp is introducing a range of playful effects. Users can add puppy ears, simulate underwater adventures, or even use karaoke-inspired animations during calls. These effects are perfect for casual chats with friends and family, adding a creative twist to everyday conversations.

Improved Desktop Experience

Desktop users are also in for a treat, as WhatsApp has revamped its call interface to simplify the process of initiating and managing calls. The updated call tab now prominently displays options to start a call, create a call link, or dial a number directly. This streamlined interface ensures that making calls from a desktop is as seamless as it is from a mobile device.

Enhanced Video Quality Across Devices

To further improve user experience, WhatsApp has upgraded its video resolution for both individual and group calls on mobile and desktop. Users can now expect clearer visuals and more reliable connections, making video calls feel closer to in-person interactions.

Recent Milestones in Video Calling

Over the past year, WhatsApp has made significant strides in enhancing its video calling capabilities. The app now supports up to 32 participants in a single call, making it suitable for larger gatherings. Other features include a speaker spotlight that highlights the current speaker during group calls and the ability to share screens with audio, ideal for presentations or collaborative sessions.
