Had no political agenda in past and now: Hassan Askari

Care Taker Chief Minister Punjab Professor Hasan Askari says he had no “political agenda” in the past, and now. He said his fundamental responsibility was to hold free and fair elections, for that he said he has to maintain law and order situation.

The Caretaker CM has been critical of Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz Government in the past. Talking about this he said, he has been “critical of every Government” in his writings.

Askari wowed to cooperate in the elections under the frame work set by Election Commission of Pakistan. “Every Provincial Government is responsible to work under this frame work and provide equal playing field to every political party” he said.

He made these statements after visiting Allama Iqbal’s mausoleum here on Saturday. Citing peace keeping crucial for fair elections he said “if you want fair elections, then peace would be fundamental for it”. He said the interim set up was for limited time period, its cabinet will be non-politicized and small.

Talking about his attachment with media he said he belonged to media for last 40 years and he will remain in future. He assured to eliminate all the doubts regarding his partiality and said “all the suspicion and distrust of political parties will wither away with the performance [of interim set up].

With the experience of last elections, he said, the role of district administration was pivotal, and we will make efforts to ensure the District Administration remains neutral.

Prof. Hasan Askari has vowed to hold free and fair elections. However, his appointment as CM Punjab has been lamented by PML-N which has cited his criticism on their performance as a cause to doubt his intentions. Prof. Hasan Askari appeared regularly on Dunya TV program ‘Think Tank’ in which he was seen bashing PML-N’s track record. However, such views should not be used to judge his performance as caretaker CM Punjab.
