ICIJ to rock the world today with the “Bermuda Papers”

News Analysis |

The International Consortium of Investigative Journalists( ICIJ) is all set to release the “Bermuda Papers” tonight. This was announced on the ICIJ Twitter handle and journalists associated with it on Sunday.

A major offshore law firm admitted that it was hacked on Tuesday, causing fears of a Panama paper-style leak which shook the world 18 months ago. Jersey-based Appleby while admitting the breach denied any tax evasion or embezzlement on its and clients’ part. However, it did say that the firm is not infallible.

The revelations will be made 18th months after the ICIJ released the Panama Papers, which embarrassed top political and business figures.

Iceland’s prime minister Sigmundur Gunnlaugsson resigned after documents leaked from the Panama Papers revealed politically embarrassing and details of his family’s dubious tax arrangements.

The political landscape of Pakistan has significantly changed after the Panama Papers. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif after being ousted from power earlier this year has been indicted along with his family in graft references.

The Panama papers also leaked details about the Sharif family, who are currently in courts defending their innocence. There is a great deal of anticipation regarding the upcoming release of the Bermuda Papers.

The News reporter, Umar Cheema who was a party in unveiling the Panama Papers took to Twitter and said:”Hello , get ready for another type release. Wait until 11 pm.The new release of documents by will shake and shock many capitals and of course capitalism.

It is not clear if there will be Pakistani names on this list as well. Similar to last time,  those involved will have already been told and been given a chance to respond. It is to be seen if the Bermuda Papers cause ripples around the globe like the Panama Papers did; it is only a matter of time before the effects are visible.
