Chairman of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Imran Khan, forms a 7-member committee for talks with the government. In a meeting, he also said that the leadership role would be given to Shah Mehmood if Khan faces disqualification.
The Committee
Imran Khan, the Chairman of PTI, has taken a significant step towards fostering dialogue with the government by forming a 7-member committee. The team comprises of seven members, including Shah Mahmood Qureshi, Pervez Khattak, Asad Qaiser, Haleem Adil Sheikh, Aun Abbasi, Murad Saeed, and Hammad Azhar. This committee has been entrusted with the responsibility of devising an action plan for the upcoming elections and establishing effective communication channels with the government.
Disqualification of Khan
Speculation surrounding the potential disqualification of Imran Khan as the PTI chairman has gained traction, prompting discussions about his potential successor. Shah Mehmood, a prominent figure within PTI, has emerged as a potential candidate to lead the party in such a scenario. However, it is essential to note that these discussions are contingent upon Imran Khan’s disqualification, and the PTI leadership remains firmly behind him.
Imran Khan, while speaking to journalists and lawyers at his Zaman Park residence in Lahore, said, “If I am disqualified, Shah Mehmood Qureshi will run the party.”
Shah Mehmood, a seasoned politician and member of the PTI, has played a vital role within the party over the years. He has held significant positions, including serving as Pakistan’s foreign minister. As a trusted confidant of Imran Khan, Mehmood’s potential ascension to the party’s leadership would be a natural progression, given his experience and loyalty to the PTI’s ideology.

“The time will soon change, and in the coming days, I will give a big surprise. There is no fight between me and the military,” Khan said. Amidst a growing rift, the Chairman has emphasized that his fight is not against the military. However, recent violent clashes between Khan’s supporters and security forces on May 9 have strained relations, leading to labeling of Khan and his followers as “traitors” by sections of the military.
A string of resignations
Imran Khan said that those who are leaving the party, some are forced and real faces of some have been exposed. “The youth are the biggest asset for the party, and they have the right to future tickets. PTI will emerge victorious in the elections.” PTI has recently experienced a series of resignations, with notable figures such as Shireen Mazari, Fawad Chaudhry, Maleeka Bokhari, and Firdous Ashiq Awan stepping down from the party. These resignations, each attributed to varying reasons, have sent shockwaves through the PTI.
