Imran Khan faces severe security threat: Babar Awan

PTI Secretary General Asad Umar and Babar Awan held a press brief in Islamabad on Thursday after the hearing of terrorism charges against Imran Khan in the Anti-Terrorism Court.

While addressing a press briefing outside the Anti-Terrorism Court on Thursday, Asad Umar said Imran Khan once again presented himself before the court in a case that caused humiliation of Pakistan in the whole world, referring to the terrorism case registered against PTI Chairman Imran Khan for allegedly threatening police and a session court judge.

International media throughout the world had reported the registration of an FIR against Imran Khan on charges of terrorism. The international coverage of such a story fostered a negative image of Pakistan in the world.

Asad Umar further said that Imran Khan’s ability to collect over 5 billion rupees in less than 3 hours for the flood-affected people of Pakistan is a proof that people blindly trust Imran Khan. “By falsely accusing Imran Khan of terrorism, you are not hurting Imran Khan, you are damaging the image of Pakistan in the international community”, Asad Umar went on to say.

“The solution to their (the government) actual problem does not exist in any court, their actual problem is that they are not left with any political response to the growing popularity of Imran Khan among the people”, Asad Umar criticized the incumbent government for resorting to non-political measures to counter Imran Khan. “They are now aware that politically countering Imran Khan is not just difficult, it is impossible”, he added.

Furthermore, Asad Umar said that to restore the trust of nation in the democracy of Pakistan, an election must be held immediately so that people can decide for themselves.

Addressing the press, Babar Awan said that they have failed in their ‘Get Imran’ agenda that started with the cipher. He further criticized the government for stating before the court that police have been horrified by the threats of Imran Khan, he said that this statement has hurt the families of police martyrs.

Lastly, Babar Awan said that the government has informed the party of the security threats faced by Imran Khan. However, the government is not sincere with regards to Imran Khan’s security despite our response in which we informed the government of our requirements for Imran Khan’s security, he added. He further said that even the personal security of Imran Khan is not allowed inside the court despite the severe security threats faced by him.

Adding on, Asad Umar said that the threat assessment cell of the Ministry of Interior has several times informed us that Imran Khan faces severe security threats through written letter, “despite that they keep putting Imran Khan in situations where he does not have any security at all”.

It must be noted here that despite not holding any public office Maryam Nawaz Sharif is being provided VIP security. Meanwhile, the security arrangements for the Former Prime Minister Imran Khan remain unsatisfactory despite the severe threats he faces.
