Imran Khan Threatens Legal Action Against NAB Officials

Addressing NAB IO Mohsin Haroon, the former prime minister accused the NAB of fabricating cases and blamed them for his wife's imprisonment. He warned the officials, saying, "I will take you both [IO and NAB chairman] to court."

On Friday, incarcerated Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan threatened to take legal action against the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) chairman and the investigation officer (IO) during a hearing of a new Toshakhana reference involving him and his wife, Bushra Bibi.

Addressing NAB IO Mohsin Haroon, the former prime minister accused the NAB of fabricating cases and blamed them for his wife’s imprisonment. He warned the officials, saying, “I will take you both [IO and NAB chairman] to court.”

On September 2, an accountability court in Rawalpindi extended the judicial remand of Khan and Bushra Bibi in connection to the new Toshakhana case, which revolves around a jewelry set gifted to Bushra by the Saudi crown prince during Khan’s tenure as prime minister (2018–2022). During the court proceedings, Imran Khan, ousted from office in 2022 through a no-confidence motion, emphasized he would hold the NAB officials accountable once released.

The NAB investigation officer, Mohsin Haroon, informed the media that the former premier had made threats at least four times. This incident follows Khan’s earlier threats toward public officials, including a notable case involving Judge Zeba Chaudhry after his ouster in April 2022.

Due to the absence of prosecutor Umar Majeed, the NAB prosecution team requested an adjournment, citing the need to review a recent Supreme Court decision regarding NAB amendments. The hearing was adjourned to September 9.

After the hearing, Khan, addressing journalists, claimed that certain individuals within the party were plotting against Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur. He urged PTI members not to undermine Gandapur, warning those plotting against him that they might not receive election tickets in the future.

Regarding Bushra Bibi, the former first lady was initially arrested in January and placed under house arrest at her Bani Gala residence following a conviction in the Toshakhana case. Although the Islamabad High Court (IHC) suspended their sentences in April, Bushra was moved to Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail in May after her plea against house arrest was approved. Despite being acquitted in another case in July, she remains incarcerated due to her involvement in the £190 million National Crime Agency (NCA) scandal and the new Toshakhana reference.
