Inside Nawaz’s jail cell

News Desk |

The ousted Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has been shifted to Kot Lakhpat jail from Adiala Jail on Tuesday, Dec 25 (today) where he will be given the better class facilities.

As per an official press release of Punjab home department, he will be provided a mattress, newspaper, table, chair, and a television. He will also be permitted to get utensils and food from his home.

In the notification, it is said that Nawaz Sharif will get the facilities under the Pakistan prison rules 1978, rule no 242.

It has also been reported that Mr. Sharif will be shifted to a room next to his brother Shahbaz Sharif in the same security ward.

An accountability court on Monday announced its verdict, sentencing Nawaz Sharif to seven years in prison apart from a fine of $25 million in the Al-Azizia Steel Mills reference. The court has acquitted Sharif in the Flagship Investments reference.

National Accountability Bureau (NAB) officials took Sharif into custody from the courtroom after the verdict was announced by Judge Arshad Malik of Islamabad’s Accountability Court No 2.

After the pronouncement of verdict in corruption references, Sharif’s legal counsel Khawaja Haris pleaded the accountability court judge Arshad Malik to shift the convict from Adiala to Lahore jail– since his family resides in Lahore.

The court, after reserving its verdict on the request, agreed but said he would be sent to Adiala for the night and will be transferred to Lahore on Tuesday. (Today)

Therefore, the criminal was kept in Rawalpindi for a night and in the morning today, he was flown to Lahore in a Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) flight (PK-615) from Islamabad International Airport.

Interestingly, earlier, Nawaz’s lawyer Khawaja Haris had pleaded the accountability court judge that the verdicts on references against the Sharif family be announced after the birthday of Nawaz Sharif, this is Dec 25 (today).

Khawaja Haris prayed the court for changing the date of announcement of the verdict from Dec 24 to Dec 26. However, the plea was rejected as the accountability judge responded that he was trying to complete the work as soon as possible, and if concluded in time, then the judgment would be announced on the due date of Dec 24.

As he was being shifted to Kot Lakhpat jail today, party supporters gathered around the jail, along with birthday cake for their leader.

Unfortunately, it happens in Pakistan, that even after being indicted by the courts in corruption cases, the followers of politicians do not realize the exploitation of their own tax money by the very same political elite.
