Is Imran Khan headed to KSA & Iran to Diffuse Tensions & Mediate?

Analysts observe that after concluding his official visit to China, Prime Minister Imran Khan will be headed to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Iran to mediate tensions between the two Muslim countries.

Prime Minister Imran Khan had said that the US President Donald Trump had asked him to mediate in the ongoing tensions with Iran. The Premier had made these remarks in September, in the aftermath of his official visit to New York to attend the 74th UNGA session.

Even though the US President Donald Trump later suggested that the proposal to mediate and defuse tensions between the US and Iran came from Prime Minister Imran Khan, who had approached the US leadership with the proposition.

Either way, analysts are confident that Prime Minister Imran Khan will be visiting Iran and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia after concluding his visit to China.

Khan Mediating KSA-Iran Tensions?

Prime Minister Imran Khan held meetings with Donald Trump and Iranian President Hassan Rouhani on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly session. Before arriving in the US, Prime Minister Imran Khan went to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, where he held meetings with Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman.

The Premier said that the Crown Prince had also reiterated the same request, urging the premier to mediate on the ongoing tensions with Tehran. The premier had said, as cited by international media, “Trump asked me that if we could de-escalate the situation and maybe come up with another deal.”

The premier added, “I immediately spoke to President Rouhani yesterday after the meeting with President Trump. I can’t say anything right now more than this, except that we’re trying and mediating.”

Analysts are of the opinion that Prime Minister Imran Khan has emerged as a powerful figure in international politics, and his role for mediating tensions between the US, KSA, and Iran is being regarded by opinion-makers and leaders across the world.

After concluding the ongoing discussions with the Chinese leadership, analysts believe that the two most important agendas amongst Prime Minister Imran Khan’s priorities include facilitating the Afghan peace process and mediating the tensions between Saudi Arabia and Iran.
