Is Nawaz Sharif, three times PM, a traitor?

News Analysis |

A petition has been filed in the Lahore High Court (LHC) against former Prime Minister Mr. Nawaz Sharif on charges of treason, as his anti-state interview to a national daily was employed by India against Pakistan during the case hearing of Indian spy Kulbhushan Jadhav.

The petition said that said his interview negatively affected the position of Pakistan in International Court of Justice (ICJ) and urged the LHC to set an early date for the hearing of plea.

Nawaz Sharif who was disqualified by the Supreme Court of Pakistan for not being honest and truthful is now serving seven years imprisonment for possessing assets beyond known sources. Nawaz Sharif has been three times prime minister of Pakistan but his critics allege that “Nawaz always came in power after signing a deal with the establishment” and Asghar Khan Case confirms such allegations. It has been now an established fact that Nawaz with the help of spy agencies toppled the government of Benazir Bhutto in 1990.

“PM @ImranKhanPTI should hold a cabinet meeting and review Nawaz Sharif’s statement on Mumbai Attacks in order to prosecute him under Article 6. This is a simple case of treason.

It is important to mention here Nawaz Sharif made some ‘irresponsible’ and ‘controversial’ remarks on Mumbai attacks. In an exclusive interview to daily Dawn’s Cyril Almeida that appeared on 12th May, Sharif blamed Pakistan for ‘allowing’ terrorists to kill 150 people in Mumbai. “Militant organizations are active. Call them non-state actors, should we allow them to cross the border and kill 150 people in Mumbai? Explain it to me. Why can’t we complete the trial?” angry Nawaz asserted. The same interview has been used by the Indian legal counsel to blame Pakistan for its alleged involvement in sponsoring terrorism in India.

The petition submitted before the LHC contended that Sharif’s statements weakened the case of Pakistan at the international court. “The interview, published in a private newspaper, is an embarrassment for the country in the world,” it added.

The petition further adds that Nawaz has failed to fulfill his oath of the public office with his anti-Pakistan remarks, hence a case of treason be initiated against him. PML-N leadership has categorically rejected these claims and maintained that Nawaz Sharif is a patriotic and Pakistan runs in his blood. But they failed to give any convincing answer that why is Indian media using a statement which was never denied by Nawaz Sharif against Pakistan?

Moments after Indian legal counsel presented Nawaz’s statements before the ICJ, journalist Anwar Lodhi recommended the Prime Minister to look into the matter and decide if article 6 can be applied against the ousted PM. “PM @ImranKhanPTI should hold a cabinet meeting and review Nawaz Sharif’s statement on Mumbai Attacks in order to prosecute him under Article 6. This is a simple case of treason. This video is the ultimate proof that Nawaz has violated his oath and acted against his own country. ”

In Pakistan, there is a widely held belief that Nawaz Sharif, a known friend of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi deliberately blamed Pakistan for harboring non-state actors to help out India in Commander Jadav’s case before the ICJ. The said statement of Nawaz may not help India at the ICJ but it has definitely raised some serious questions on his credibility and loyalty with his country.
