Israel says checking possibility of killing of Hamas’s Yahya Sinwar

The statement of Israeli troops comes after a 'precise attack' on Jabalia Camp in the north of Gaza. The attack resulted in the death of 22 people, leaving dozens of others wounded, mostly women and children.

Israel claims to have killed the Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar most probably in fighting with Hamas in Gaza. The Israeli army says it is checking the possibility of eliminating Yahya Sinwar.

The Israeli forces did not mention when and where this incident happened. The statement of Israeli troops comes after a ‘precise attack’ on Jabalia Camp in the north of Gaza. The attack resulted in the death of 22 people, leaving dozens of others wounded, mostly women and children.

Hamas has yet to respond to the statements made by the Israeli forces on Wednesday evening. Yahya Sinwar was named the overall chief of Hamas in August after the killing of his predecessor Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran.

He previously served as the group’s leader inside the Gaza Strip- a position he took over in 2017. Sinwar is currently on the top list of Israel’s hit list. The country’s security agencies believe he masterminded the planning and execution of the unprecedented 7 October 2023 attacks on southern Israel, which killed over 1,200 people and 251 taken back into Gaza as hostages.

Graphic images posted online show a figure resembling Sinwar lying in the rubble of the building in the aftermath of the intense military activity sustaining critical injuries. Reports say DNA Testing is being done on a body. Israel has Sinwar’s records from the time he was a prisoner in an Israeli jail from 1988 to 2011.

Defence Minister Yoav Gallant has quoted the Torah to say Israel’s enemies cannot hide.

“You will pursue your enemies and they will fall before you by the sword. Our enemies cannot hide. We will pursue and eliminate them,” Gallant adds.

In the past few months, Israel has eliminated top leaders of Hamas of Gaza and Hezbollah of Lebanon.
