Its Zardari’s turn now: PPP intensifies efforts to gain relief on medical grounds

The PPP leadership has intensified its efforts to obtain relief for former president Asif Ali Zardari on medical grounds after the successful theatrics that allowed former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to depart for London for his medical treatment.

After the theatrical departure of incarcerated former Premier Nawaz Sharif, who has gone to London for his medical treatment, the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) also appears to be making efforts to obtain relief for former President Asif Ali Zardari, who is presently under treatment at the primary public sector hospital in the federal capital.

During the last few weeks, many PPP leaders, including PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, have been voicing concerns over the worsening health of Asif Ali Zardari. Recently, the party has begun highlighting their demand for adding Zardari’s personal physician to be included within the medical board established by the government to examine his health.

The PPP co-Chairman was taken to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) in October after the medical board revealed that he is afflicted with cardiac issues, diabetes and other health ailments that require medical care.

Zardari’s Health Deteriorates

The official statements given by the PPP members and leaders do not compare Zardari’s condition with that of Nawaz Sharif, who was allowed to be examined by his personal physician. However, reports reveal that private conversations amongst the leaders voice complaints over the discriminatory treatment shown to the former President.

Speaking to the media, a senior PPP leader said that after Zardari refused to submit a bail application, the PPP leaders initiated a campaign to present his case, which is not relevant to that of Nawaz Sharif as the former President is not convicted as yet, and all the cases leveled against him are currently being investigated.

The PPP leader added that during the party’s core committee meeting, held last week, the issue was raised and it was decided to initiate a media campaign after Nawaz Sharif’s departure to exert political pressure upon the government and extract similar relief for Asif Ali Zardari.

Govt Toying with his Life

Briefing the press on Thursday, Dr. Nafisa Shah, PPP information Secretary and MNA, voiced concerns over the “information obtained from a source at the hospital” with regards to Zardari’s health condition. Dr. Nafisa said that if anything happens to Zardari, then “Prime Minister Imran Khan will be blamed.”

Dr. Nafisa claimed that the government is deliberately denying access to Zardari’s personal physician, and media sources have revealed that the government-appointed doctors have advised the former president to immediately undergo angiography.

The PPP Information Secretary said that the government-appointed doctors were concerned about the deteriorating health of Mr. Zardari, however, the “selected government is toying with his life, and has proven its insensitivity with its measures.”

PPP General Secretary, Farhatullah Babar denied that the PPPP wants to obtain relief for Zardari in the manner provided to Nawaz Sharif. Babar said that Zardari’s situation is much different from that of Nawaz, as he is not convicted and has not even applied for bail.

However, Babar said that the government should allow Zardari to be examined by his personal physicians, including Dr. Asim Hussain, as Nawaz Sharif was allowed.
