India’s Jay Shah is set to replace Greg Barclays as Chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC).
He seems to be the strong contender to take the charge after Barclays informed the directors of the administrative body of stepping from the role. Barclays has been the ICC Chairman since 2020.
Barclays made his decision after Jay Shah showed interest in taking up the role. Shah claims he has the support of other members.
“ICC chair Greg Barclay confirmed to the board that he will not stand for a third term and will step down from the post when his current tenure finishes at the end of November. Barclay was appointed as the independent ICC chair in November 2020, before being re-elected in 2022,” an ICC spokesperson told The Age.
“Current directors are now required to put forward nominations for the next chair by 27 August 2024 and if there is more than one candidate, an election will be held with the term of the new chair commencing on 1 December 2024.”

Shah claims he has the support from the key ICC nations, England and Australia. He is currently BCCI Secretary. His current position will expire next year. He will become the youngest ICC Chairman at the age of 35, if he assumes the charge.
The change of ICC Chairman will come at a time when Pakistan is planning to host the ICC Champion Trophy 2025 on its soil. So far, India has not given a firm response if the team will travel to Pakistan for the event or not.
Pakistan, however, is adamant about hosting the event and is not eager to shift the event to a neutral venue. Preparations are in full swing in Pakistan, with the upgradation and development of major stadiums happening by the Pakistan Cricket Board. Champions Trophy will take in February last year.
