Kamran Akmal apologizes for disrespectful comments on Sikh community

Indian bowler Arshdeep Singh was given the last over to defend the target of 120 runs set by India. Pakistan lost the match by eight runs in the match held at Nassau Country Cricket Stadium in New York.

Former Pakistani cricketer Kamran Akmal was forced to apologize after he made inappropriate comments about the Sikh community during a live television show.

The comments came on a live TV show during the India-Pakistan match for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 match on Sunday. Indian bowler Arshdeep Singh was given the last over to defend the target of 120 runs set by India. Pakistan lost the match by eight runs in the match held at Nassau Country Cricket Stadium in New York.

“Kuch bhi ho sakta hai… 12 baj gaye hai (Anything can happen. It is already 12),” said Akmal while commenting on Arshdeep Singh during the show.

“Lakh di laanat tere Kamraan Akhmal.. You should know the history of sikhs before u open ur filthy mouth. We Sikhs saved ur mothers and sisters when they were abducted by invaders, the time invariably was 12 o’clock . Shame on you guys.. Have some Gratitude @KamiAkmal23,” said Former Indian cricketer Harbhajan Singh.

The strong backlash forced Kamran Akmal to issue an apology.  “I deeply regret my recent comments and sincerely apologize to @harbhajan_singh and the Sikh community. My words were inappropriate and disrespectful. I have the utmost respect for Sikhs all over the world and never intended to hurt anyone. I am truly sorry. #Respect #Apology”

However, the comments of a former Indian cricketer also triggered a strong backlash from Pakistan. Several users of X made historical references as they retorted to the strong tweet made by Harbhajan Singh.
“Kamran Akmal has rightly apologized for his inappropriate statement but look at this: “We Sikhs saved your mothers and sisters”. Banda Singh Bahadhur burnt scores of Muslim villages in Sirhind. The Glorious Qur’an was desecrated before Abdali came to avenge. And this is covered by Sikh authors. So spare us this BS,” said one social media user with the X handle named Fidato.
