Lady Gaga’s ‘A Star Is Born’ is already getting Oscar buzz

News Desk |

American pop star Lady Gaga has finally achieved the pinnacle of success in the acting side with her film A Star Is Born being touted as “this generation’s Titanic”. The pop star rose to fame through her music, particularly because she experimented with her looks and getups a lot.

At the red carpet of the TIFF, she spoke about wanting to be an actress “I’ve always wanted to be an actress and this is more than I ever imagined. I am just so honored and grateful and humbled.” She insists that her effort in transitioning to acting for this film as is as great as Cooper’s in learning music and singing live for the movie.

“At the beginning of making this film, we shook hands literally, and he said to me, ‘You’re an actress’,” Gaga said. “And I said to him, ‘You’re a musician’.” She plays the role of Ally, a talented vocalist who Bradley Cooper’s character discovers and brings to the spotlight.

The movie (a first to be directed by Bradley Cooper) has been receiving rave reviews from critics who have praised everything from Cooper’s direction to music and Gaga’s acting. Gaga has penned several tracks for the film. The film has also been praised for the chemistry between the two leads.

The movie is the third remake of the 1937 film (not counting the Ashweriya Rai Bachan starrer Hindi film with the same plot). The Wrap’s Alonso Duralde stated, “Cooper and Lady Gaga are dynamite together; this is a story that lives and dies by the central relationship and the instant chemistry that must blossom between them, and these two have it in spades”.

The Verge called it ‘timeless’ and Roger Egbert gave the film 3.5 out of 4. And Deadline in its positive review “This whole cinematic soufflé completely falls if you don’t believe the chemistry of these two star-crossed lovers, and Cooper and Gaga, in her first feature film lead, have it in spades. I know this story backward and forwards and tried to resist, but thanks to the poignancy and passion of its stars I completely succumbed to it and the tears it gets are completely earned – and then some.”

All this is a testament to how talented of an artist Gaga really is. Her strong greater-than-four octave range established her as a powerhouse vocalist and through hits like “Poker face” “Born This Way” and “Applause” she garnered many awards and much fame. In recent years though, she changed her image to a more conventional look. It all started when her Oscar tribute to Julie Andrews (where she looked regal than eccentric) was so well received.

That, coupled with fans lukewarm reception to Art pop her previous album caused her to appear more mature. Gaga gained serious recognition as an actress when she won a Golden Globe for her role in American Horror Story. Many believe that after the film’s warm reception by critics, the film is sure to be a hit with fans and may end up sweeping the Academy Awards this time around.
