Maryam Nawaz warns Supreme Court judges

The Supreme Court of Pakistan declared Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party eligible for seats reserved for women and minorities, delivering a significant blow to PM Shehbaz Sharif’s ruling coalition.

Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz in her fiery speech today disapproved of the Supreme Court in reserved seats case as well as reprimanded judges.

She accused judges of ‘altering the law and rewriting the constitution for Pakistan Tehreek-I-Insaf. Maryam Nawaz even threatened the judges that the government would come into action against such cases. “I would like to ask the SC judges to let the country function,” Maryam said addressing an event in Lahore.

Nawaz added that judges are rewriting the constitution to bring one man back in power.  “Who are those (people) who do not like the country making progress and re-write the Constitution,” she said.

She said that the Supreme Court gave relief to the party-PTI that does not even exist in the parliament. “We will not let this be a cakewalk for you. This government will complete its five-year tenure. If anyone tries to create political instability, they will be dealt with iron hands,” the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader warned.

The landmark decision of the Supreme Court marked that PTI was eligible for reserved seats.

A 13-member bench, led by Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa, announced the verdict. The court had reserved its decision after hearing appeals from the PTI-backed Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) the previous day.

The SIC petitioned for the reallocation of 77 seats for women and minorities, initially assigned to PM Shehbaz’s coalition after the February 8 general elections. However, both the Peshawar High Court (PHC) and the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) rejected this appeal in March, deeming the SIC ineligible for these seats.

On May 6, the Supreme Court suspended the PHC and ECP’s March rulings, which had denied the SIC the reserved seats. The court ordered the petitions to be placed before a three-judge committee to form a larger bench, as the case involved interpreting constitutional provisions, as highlighted by Attorney General for Pakistan Mansoor Usman Awan.
