Meta launches Edits as TikTok faces pressure in US

Mosseri noted that while Edits may resemble CapCut on the surface, it’s designed to serve a different audience.

Meta has officially released Edits, a standalone video editing app designed to compete directly with CapCut, the popular editor from TikTok’s parent company ByteDance. Now available for free on both iOS and Android, Edits is Instagram’s most ambitious tool yet for content creators seeking more professional-grade editing capabilities than what’s available in-app.

Aimed at Serious Creators

Instagram head Adam Mosseri has emphasized that Edits isn’t meant for everyday users. Instead, it targets serious creators and professionals who want a comprehensive suite of tools to manage their content. The app allows users to handle entire video projects—complete with space for creative notes, performance tracking, and collaborative workflows.

Mosseri noted that while Edits may resemble CapCut on the surface, it’s designed to serve a different audience. In comments posted on Threads, he said the app offers a “much broader range of creative tools” and “will end up pretty different” from CapCut, pointing to a more niche but focused user base.

Advanced Editing Tools

What sets Edits apart from Instagram’s built-in editor is its far more sophisticated feature set. Among its standout tools are:

  • AI-generated animations from still images
  • Green screen replacement
  • Automatic subject cutouts
  • Intelligent cropping and scene detection
  • Key performance analytics, including viewer engagement and completion rates

These capabilities bring Edits closer to what desktop video editing software offers, but in a mobile-first format. Creators can polish content for Instagram, Facebook, or even WhatsApp without ever leaving the Meta ecosystem.

No Watermarks, Seamless Integration

One feature creators will appreciate: videos exported from Edits are watermark-free, unlike CapCut’s free version. This allows for a more professional look when posting content across various platforms. Additionally, the app’s tight integration with Meta’s platforms makes sharing and distributing content much easier and quicker, streamlining the creative process for social-first video makers.

Project Management

Beyond editing, Edits also introduces tools to support broader content workflows. Users can collaborate on video projects by sharing drafts, enabling group editing and feedback. For influencers, brand partners, and media teams, this level of collaboration makes the app particularly versatile.

Creators can also organize their ideas, track notes, and monitor performance data—all within the app. These features reinforce Meta’s aim to build a complete ecosystem that supports the entire content creation journey from concept to analytics.

Strategic Timing and Market Position

The release of Edits comes at a time of heightened scrutiny around ByteDance apps in the U.S. Earlier this year, both TikTok and CapCut were temporarily removed from U.S. app stores due to regulatory concerns. Though both apps have since returned, the brief removal exposed vulnerabilities Meta appears ready to exploit.

By launching Edits now, Meta is positioning itself as a stable, reliable alternative for creators who might be wary of potential restrictions on TikTok-linked tools. Meta has already teased upcoming updates for Edits, including keyframe-based animation tools, enhanced AI capabilities, and multi-user collaborative editing. These features—once rolled out—could make Edits an even more powerful creative platform.
