Miftah Ismail slammed for wiping face with dupatta of Sania Ashiq

Netizens are unwilling to accept his clarification. They have demanded Maryam Nawaz to take strict action against Miftah Ismail. His video has stirred debate around the safety and security of women in the political culture of Pakistan.

PMLN party member, Miftah Ismail, is in the crosshairs of the social media users for his latest dupatta gaffe during the press conference of Maryam Nawaz on Tuesday. He is under blistering attack from netizens after an embarrassing video of him wiping his sweat from the dupatta of a female party worker, Sania Ashiq circulated on social media.

A video of Miftah Ismail wiping sweat from his face with the dupatta of a female party member, Sania Ashiq, went viral on social media on Tuesday. The video left the social media users outraged as they flaked the former finance minister of Pakistan for violating the personal space of a female.

The video shows Sania Ashiq was visibly left uncomfortable as Miftah Ismail, standing behind her, held her dupatta to wipe his face. The video has left them ‘shocked’, commented several Twitter users. Adding that they did not expect such inappropriate behavior from Miftah Ismail.

Some said he used her dupatta to wipe his nose. The social media rage prompted Miftah Ismail to issue a clarification that unfortunately backfired.

“A video shows me wiping my face with my sister @SaniaaAshiq’s dupatta. As seen, I reached in my pocket, got a tissue & wiped my face. 2nd time I unknowingly picked up her dupatta on the tissue to wipe my face. Of course, I apologised to her when I saw it,” said Miftah Ismail in his tweet.

Netizens are unwilling to accept his clarification. They have demanded Maryam Nawaz to take strict action against Miftah Ismail. His video has stirred debate around the safety and security of women in the political culture of Pakistan. Twitter users have been discussing how Pakistani political culture denigrates and disdains women. The politics of Pakistan is rife from the instances of the character assassination of female leaders to violating their personal space blatantly in public.

A few months back, PMLN leader, Zubair Umar, had been the center of social media attention after his objectionable videos were leaked online.

The video had created a storm on social media with netizens expressing their bewilderment. Muhammad Zubair is counted among the senior politician in the country and is the brother of federal minister, Asad Umar.

The videos that are said to be leaked show Muhammad Zubair allegedly involved in physical relations with various unidentified women. His face can be seen in the video. The PMLN politician has become the top trend on social media.

Similarly, Functional League’s Nusrat Sehar Abbasi has been subjected to catcalling in Sindh Assembly several times. Pakistan’s male politicians perhaps need to reconsider and review their behavior regarding their female counterparts to make the political culture of Pakistan more inclusive and healthy for women.
