In this realm, Federal Minister for Human Rights Dr. Shireen Mazari visited the Islamabad College of Art and Science and informed the students about how to curb child abuse in the society.
The video uploaded on the Twitter account is captioned, “The Ministry of Human Rights launches an awareness campaign to prevent child abuse.”
The federal Minister said that education institutions can play an important role to prevent child abuse and to educate students which would help them to identify the issue and to save themselves at the first stage.
A free helpline number 1099 has also been launched to assist the people and provide legal advice on the related issues.

Dr. Shireen Mazari during her visit to the college actively engaged with the students on the protection of children. Several documentaries were also played on the occasion.

Addressing the students, Dr. Shireen Mazari said that child abuse has been rampant in society and every day we hear heart-wrenching stories of the child abuse.
“It is a painful fact that we treat this issue as a social taboo and we are reluctant to speak about it instead of educating our children. As a result, they are not able to understand the sensitivity of this issue,” said the minister.

She urged that we need to make it a shameful act for the people who abuse children in a various way and this is only possible when we talk about it. She said that child abuse can happen anywhere and in most cases, the close relations are involved.
“We need to take this issue seriously which requires us to recognize this issue and the parents should be open with their children while informing them about child abuse and preventive measures, said the minister.
She further stated that the ministry has the Islamabad Capital Territory Child Protection Act but the ministry is also planning to bring child protection commission. “We are going to establish Child Protection Commission under the umbrella of ICT Act.” She added besides legislation and constitutional bodies, awareness is also crucial in fighting child abuse.

She stressed that we can use the platform of the schools to give counselling to our students.
