US Congresswoman Ilhan Omar slammed Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his government for gross violations of human rights in Indian Occupied Kashmir. Ilhan Omar, a vociferous voice against anti-Muslim bigotry, berated PM Modi for spearheading the anti-Muslim campaign in India and the ethnic cleansing of the Muslim population in Jammu Kashmir.
In her latest tweet, Ilhan Omar shared the account of Representative Andy Levin on the current lockdown in Indian administered Kashmir, asserting that “The India of Narendra Modi is not the India I fell in love with.”
“I was struck most of all by its religious pluralism and raucous democratic culture. Hindus, Muslims, Christians, Sikhs, Jains, Buddhists — different peoples living together under one democracy.
The India of Narendra Modi is not the India I fell in love with.”

Omar despised the rise of religious extremism and jingoism in India, which according to her has undermined India’s celebrated characteristic of secularism and religious pluralism.
In contrast to her counterparts, Ilhan Omar has been quite vocal on Kashmir issue, actively campaigning for Kashmiris, and repeatedly calling for the attention of her followers and colleagues to the grave human plight unfolding in the valley. She is urging other members of the House of Representatives to join her in protest against India over its evident secrecy on Kashmir. Ilhan Omar, being the largest democracy of the world, expects India to abide by the democratic principles of freedom in Kashmir.
Racial discrimination, Islamophobia, oppression, and vilifying of Muslims are some of the vices she vows to stand against.
A few days ago, she called for the restoration of peace and normalcy in the valley, which has been under lockdown for more than 20 days. She demanded “immediate restoration of communication” and “de-escalation” in occupied Kashmir. With the suspension of communication services in Jammu Kashmir, the valley has been alienated from the rest of the world, with stories of horrific torture and barbarianism emerging as international media started getting limited access to the valley.
I am excited to see so many members joining us in calling attention to what is happening in Kashmir.
Please continue to call your member and ask them to speak up.
We expect openness from India, which is the largest democracy in the world. https://t.co/2eMqu1SzRl

Taking to Twitter, Omar wrote: “We should be calling for an immediate restoration of communication; respect for human rights, democratic norms, and religious freedom; and de-escalation in Kashmir.”
In an unapologetic message, Omar highlighted how India is deliberately obstructing the access of international humanitarian organizations to the valley to gauge the extent of New Delhi’s imposed sanctions on local folks.

Omar, a defiant woman, has been challenging strict stereotypes against Muslims in the West and across the world. She has been recently acknowledged as the top 5 Muslim women by international magazine ‘Muslim vibe’ for fearlessly breaking the stereotypes.
Racial discrimination, Islamophobia, oppression, and vilifying of Muslims are some of the vices she vows to stand against.
We should be calling for an immediate restoration of communication; respect for human rights, democratic norms, and religious freedom; and de-escalation in Kashmir.
International organizations should be allowed to fully document what is happening on the ground.
