Netflix has confirmed that popular Spanish drama Money Heist will return to the streaming service for another season. However, the catch is that the show will end with its upcoming fifth season.

In a statement creator Alex Pina stated “We’ve spent almost a year thinking about how to break up the band. How to put the Professor on the ropes. How to get into situations that are irreversible for many characters. The result is the fifth part of La Casa de Papel. The war reaches its most extreme and savage levels, but it is also the most epic and exciting season”.

The series stars Úrsula Coberó (Tokyo), Álvaro Morte (The Professor), Itziar Ituño (Lisbon), Pedro Alonso (Berlin), Miguel Herrán (Rio), Jaime Lorente (Denver), Esther Acebo (Stockholm), Enrique Arce (Arturo), Darko Peric (Helsinki), Hovik Keuchkerian (Bogotá), Luka Peros (Marseille), Belén Cuesta (Manila), Fernando Cayo (Coronel Tamayo), Rodrigo de la Serna (Palermo), Najwa Nimri (Inspector Sierra), and José Manuel Poga (Gandía). Money Heist’s Popularity

Le Casa De Papel, originated on network television in Spain where it didn’t have strong enough ratings. However, despite no promotion, the show began to be widely watched when it landed on Netflix. Soon, the numbers became so strong that Netflix began to invest in the series, including hiring a new team for the dubbing, buying the overall series and expanding the budget of the show.

The decision to end the series most likely is a creative one rather than an order from Netflix given the wild success of the series. According to an investor letter released in April, the last eight-episode season of the Álex Pina-created Spanish-language hit was seen by 65 million households. The show has managed to become a global sensation and is a regular fixture in Pakistan’s 10 most watch shows list on Netflix. The show also regularly trends in Pakistan, a feat that is rare given the series is not an English language or a local show. Money Heist is the most viewed program on Netflix in France, Italy, Argentina, Chile, Brazil, and Portugal. The series also has significant fanbases in North Africa, the Middle East, and Turkey. Fans of the series include everyone from Neymar the footballer, to Stephen King the writer and Shahrukh Khan himself.

Pina has an overall deal with Netflix and recently released a new show on the service, White Lines, with The Crown producers. However, the show received little fanfare and was quite mediocre so it is no wonder that it is not as buzzy a title as Money Heist. However, with Money Heist finally ending, the pressure is on him to deliver a worthy successor to the series for the streaming service.
