Mother charged for killing one month old in Kansas City

They made a gruesome discovery: the one-month-old had suffered thermal injuries, allegedly as a result of being placed in the oven.

A one-month-old infant was discovered deceased in Missouri, Kansas City, sparking shock and disbelief in the local community. The harrowing incident has led to the mother, Mariah Thomas, facing serious charges after authorities found the infant tragically placed in an oven instead of her crib.

The events unfolded when authorities responded to a report of an unresponsive infant. Upon arrival, they made a gruesome discovery: the one-month-old had suffered thermal injuries, allegedly as a result of being placed in the oven. According to the complaint, Thomas, in a tragic error, had intended to put the child down for a nap but mistakenly placed her in the oven instead of the crib.

Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker expressed profound sorrow over the loss of the infant and emphasized the gravity of the situation. “We acknowledge the gruesome nature of this tragedy, and our hearts are weighted by the loss of this precious life,” she stated in a heartfelt message. Details from the complaint paint a stark picture of the scene authorities encountered. The baby was found in the living room, lying in a car seat near the front door. Tragically, the infant’s clothing had melted onto her diaper, indicating the severity of the thermal injuries she had sustained.

The grandparents of the infant, who shared a home with Thomas, were stunned by the news. They had left the home earlier that morning, unaware of the unfolding tragedy. A call from Thomas, hysterical and distraught, informed the grandmother of the horrific mistake. Upon returning home, the grandfather noticed the smell of smoke, adding to the grim reality of the situation.

Facing the Consequences

Thomas, burdened by grief and remorse, allegedly confessed to authorities that she had accidentally placed her child in the oven. Now, she faces serious charges, including a Class A felony of Endangering the Welfare of a Child in the 1st Degree, Death of a Child. If convicted, she could be sentenced to a minimum of 10 years and a maximum of life in prison.
