Muslims lambasted on social media as Century old temple vandalized

According to several social media posts an angry mob of 300-400 Muslim men vandalized an ancient Durga Mandir (temple) in Lal Kuan, Chandni Chowk, allegedly on the night of 30th June following an argument between two men.

The social media posts alleged that a mob of 300-400 Muslim men stormed the temple and damaged statues, deities, fixtures, glass ceilings and burnt the curtains. Videos from the temple circulated social media. According to the priest of the temple, Anil Kumar Pandey, a fight broke out outside, after which the temple was attacked.

“I don’t know anybody’s name or face. They broke the idols of the deities and burnt the curtains of the temple. I don’t want anything but that they should be punished,” Pandey added. He is uncertain if the attack was communal but advised not to give it a communal color.

The Muslim community is being lambasted on social media with severe debates over the rights and freedom of Hindus and Muslims dominating the Indian Twitter.

According to Police records, a verbal argument broke out between two men over a parking issue when a boy wanted to park a bike outside the shop but the owner refused. The argument turned into a scuffle when a group of men beat the boy. The boy was taken to the hospital and since it was between two communities, the news spread like wildfire.

The communal tensions between Hindus and Muslims have gripped the area for the past two days, as ‘#DaraHuaMusalman’ becomes a top trend on Indian Twitter space.

The indignant Twitter users are protesting against the vandalism of a century-old temple. The Muslim community is being lambasted on social media with severe debates over the rights and freedom of Hindus and Muslims dominating the Indian Twitter.

They censured the central government of India for silence over the dispute and failing to protect the rights of the Hindu community. They argued that there is an outcry to protect the rights of minorities and Muslims however no action has been taken over the violation of their rights.

While the religious dignitaries and security officials strive to diffuse the situation, tensions are invoking for peace and calmness from both the parties.
