Nawaz Sharif’s mother, Begum Shamim Akhtar passes away

Sources revealed that her situatuation had aggravated in the past week and could not recover do to her old age. Begum Shamim Akhtar was 90 years old.

Pakistan’s former Prime Minister, Nawaz Sharif, and PMLN’s president, Shahbaz Sharif’s mother, Begum Shamim Akhtar passed away this morning, Sunday, 22 November. This news was confirmed by a senior leader of PMLN, Attahullah Tarar, in a tweet, “The mother of Mian Nawaz Sharif and Mian Shahbaz Sharif has passed away Api jee Passed away.”

The cause of death has not yet been confirmed, but she had been unwell for quite some time and was being treated in London, where she had travelled to earlier this year. Begum Shamim was living with Nawaz Sharif at Avenfields apartments.

Sources revealed that her situation had deteriorated in the past week and could not recover do to her old age. Begum Shamim Akhtar was 90 years old. Sources further revealed that Suleman Shahbaz, Shahbaz Sharif’s son, confirmed that arrangements were underway for the body’s burial in Pakistan.

Shahbaz Sharif and his son Hamza Shahbaz, who are in prison, have been informed of Begum Shamim’s death. According to sources, PMLN leaders will request the court to allow Shahbaz and his son to be released on payroll to attend the funeral.


As soon as the news broke out, condolences started streaming in through various mediums. PPP leader Bilawal Bhutto and his father Asif Ali Zardari have extended their condolences and expressed their grief.

 

Chief of Army Staff, Qamar Javed Bajwa also sent out his condolences.


Maryam Nawaz, granddaughter of Begum Shamim was at the PDM jalsa in Peshawar today where she received the news of her grandmother’s demise. After the announcement of Begum Shamim’s death, Maryam stayed at the PDM for a while longer (about 1 hour) and briefly addressed the Jalsa, where she asked the crowd to pray for her grandmother’s departed soul. In accordance with tradition, Maryam Nawaz has announced to suspend her political activities for a period of 40 days.
